Composing Tips

Composing can be quite confusing sometimes. It is always hard to make a new melody. You've already gotten the inspiration, but there is more than that! You need chords, a perfect harmony, and many other complex things to bring heaven to the ear.

 Finding Chords

Finding chords is not easy. This guide will only loosen a bit of the rope.

First of all, try to match up your desired note with a key from your piano (or any other instrument, but make sure your strings are tuned and stuff like that). Is your B the "A" of the position you want? (I refer note placement to C Major. You know how A is the sixth note of C Major? Yeah.)

Second, make it your position for your song. Tada!

Looking for emotional chords, though? Here are my suggestions:

Happy: C Major, D Major, F Major, and G Major

Reason: They're the positions beginners often use because it's hardly ever complex (unless you want it to). People like plain, simple happiness. If you are using a software that makes 8bit music or stuff like that, Eb Major is a position you should consider using.

 Sad/Depression: f minor, E Major

Reason: F minor is a rarely used position (well, in my area). It sounds new and depressing to the ear. It touches sorrow very deeply. VERY deeply. Here are two songs I used f minor in: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/501305 http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/501465
E Major is a very soothing and sad position combination. For this song, E Major served as a soothing, sad, and love position. http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/500627 Actually, all minors make music sad. It's okay to use any minor. However, these two chords are the ones I know that are perfect for sad songs like mine.

 Love: c minor, E Major

Reason: c minor is the relative of Eb Major. (AKA: Both of them share the same position). Eb Major reflects pure love in piano. If you plan to use it, that is a very smart thing to do. Like I said in the Sad/Depression emotion, E Major served as a soothing, sad, and love position. It is also a very smart position to use if you are willing to lean your song over to the soothing and sad side as well.

 Soothing/Calming: c minor, E Major, D Major

Reason: E Major, D Major, and c minor are very good in sounding pretty and soothing. Any position will sound soothing and pretty as long as you use slow notes (notes that are a quarter note or above, in my opinion) and perfect harmonization, but to me, these are the prettiest you can find. In orchestra, D Major is a very common use for strings. Strings mean that elegant fancy touch most of the time. It's also a good move to add some for sadness. Violins and flutes go awesomely together. This is a sample: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/503369

 Relief: G Major, F Major

Reason: Any chord will do fine, suggested happy chords giving boosts to that heroic feeling. However, using these two chords are the infinte bonus points giver, in my opinion. Here is a good sample: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/500568 It is personally one of my favorites. It gives off those heroic vibes.

 Epicness: Any chord, really.

Reason: It depends on how epic you want it to sound like. Try it out! Usually majors are for heroes and heroines while minor for villians and....villianines? lol!

 Angryness: Any minor, really.

Reason: Minors are very common use for serving negative songs. That's why if you make a minor your main chord of the song, the listener will go, "Oh! This song is an angry song!" In most cases, if you make a major chord the base, the listener will either be confused, or think it is an extremely happy song. Don't worry- you can always add a little major in your angry songs. Just don't add too much. It's like a recipe.

These are possibly the best suggestions I can make for now. :3 so please feel free to test it out!
